Our restructuring goal with the Management and Support Staff (Mgmt/SS) workgroup aligns with our overall employee strategy – to achieve the necessary financial savings by implementing sustainable, structural changes that will position our airline to compete and win.
Management and Support staff will participate in the same universal benefits programs as all other employees, including the changes to active healthcare, retiree healthcare and retirement benefits. In addition, American conducted a complete top-to-bottom redesign of its management and support staff structure, reducing the size of the organization by more than 1,500 positions and the cost by more than 15% through this process alone.
We announced the final phase of the management and support staff redesign in August, a project unprecedented in its scope and its results. With this project, we reshaped our entire organization with a focus on creating the strongest possible foundation for the new American. This has been a very difficult process for all - one that has involved uncertainty, anxiety and extensive change. And while it is never easy to redesign a company or eliminate positions, our financial circumstances and need for business improvement made change a necessity.
